Why terrazzo will continue to reign in 2020

Thursday, December 12th, 2019Design

Interior design group Houzz predicts one of the biggest home design trends set to define 2020 – continued interest in terrazzo.

In 2018 and 2019, we saw terrazzo come to the fore of Australian home design. In 2020, interior design group Houzz expects demand will only rise. With a community of millions of homeowners and home professionals, Houzz believes it holds unique insights into why terrazzo has been so popular.Terrazzo in use. "Increasing 28 percent in Houzz searches in 2019, the emergence of terrazzo will turn into a full-blown reign in 2020, with the chips becoming larger and colourways becoming bolder," says Vanessa Walker, editor of Houzz Australia and New Zealand.

Terrazzo is a composite material that can be poured in-situ or pre-case and formed of chips of marble, quartz, granite or glass. Professionals on Houzz explain that advancements to tile technology have allowed manufacturers to explore exciting new combinations of terrazzo finishes, shapes and colours. This means homeowners can customise the tile to match their home design, an attractive feature to many renovators.

What’s more, the colourful tile is sustainable and environmentally friendly, sometimes formed using only recycled materials. For the 22 percent of renovating homeowners on Houzz that say integrating 'green' materials is a priority, this proves particularly appealing.

Another reason why terrazzo is so beloved by homeowners is because of its durability. Even in high traffic areas, the material is known to last years without signs of wear and tear. This durability also means that terrazzo is an investment, as there is little to spend on maintenance.

In 2020, renovating and design professionals can expect demand for terrazzo in bathrooms, kitchens, living rooms and hallways. And not just on floors – on walls and homewares too.
